CROMWELL:
b. July 1629.
Lively and vivacious, Bettie was her father's favourite. She married
John Claypole in January 1646 and had four children. Her kindness
and warmth endeared her to the Protectorate court, where she often
interceded for Royalist prisoners. Her premature death from cancer
in August 1658 profoundly affected Oliver, who died the following
month. Like other prominent Cromwellians, Bettie was buried in
Westminster Abbey; by chance, hers was the only grave left
undisturbed at the Restoration.

Notes for JAMES
CLAYPOOLE:
James and Helena were
Quakers who upon invitation from, William Penn, set sail, with their 7
children, aboard the Concord, arriving in America in October of 1683, to
settle in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where James served as Penn's secretary.
He was reportedly Penn's best friend.

LINEAGE DAUGHTER'S
AMERICAN COLONISTS---James Claypoole 1634-1687 married Helena Mercer, PA
5/307.
The only knowledge I
have of Claypool(e)s in Germany is James Claypoole (b. 1634 to John
Claypoole and Mary Angell of Northampton, England), who went to Bremen,
Germany circa 1649 to apprentice to a merchant. He met and married his wife
(Helena Mercer) in Bremen. They moved to London around 1660, where they soon
became involved with the Quakers and William Penn. Perhaps James went to
Germany because his family was connected somehow to the Cleijpools that were
in Germany. Do you know anything more about them?
FROM KREFELD... TO
PHILADELPHIA ~ A BRIEF EXPLANATION ~ The history of the Original 13 settlers
from Germantown is interesting, involved, and at times mysterious. But the
primary incentive that induced them to leave their homeland was based simply
on principles of freedom, which made their "promised land", America, the
perfect solution to an ongoing problem... "religious persecution".Note: The
issues of religious conflict during this time period are deep and involved,
and are not expounded upon in this "brief" explanation. Look for other links
to sources on topics mentioned in this website where you can find more
in-depth information. When William Penn was searching for righteous, pious,
God-fearing men and their families to fulfill his dream, (which he refers to
as his "Holy Experiment"), Penn had encountered the German people in the
lower Rhine Valley. The people he found there were in need of relief from
oppression and hostility, and as it turned out, filled his requirements for
religious, moral, and economic status perfectly. As a result, 13 families
were invited by William Penn to come to the new land of opportunity, to be a
part of the creation of a new type of world... where people were free to
worship without fear of retribution... in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These
are the families who we now refer to as "The Original 13". The Original 13 "Krefelders",
who set sail in July 1683 and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in
October, 1683 on the Concord, are considered to be the first "group" or
mass-emigration to America. They were also the original settlers of
Germantown, Pennsylvania. We invite you to scroll down the page to view
three photographs of Krefeld, Germany... today's streets... upon which our
forefather's had once walked over 300 years ago.
Aboard this ship was
James Claypoole (I), his wife Helena (Mercer), 7 children and several
servants.
!BIOGRAPHY: !They
sailed from Gravesend, ENGLAND on the ship, CONCORD on 25 AUG 1683. James
was a secretery to WILLIAM PENN and he along with his brother, Norton of
Sussex Co, Delaware each received land grants from Wm. Penn. After the
deaths in 1687 & 1688 of James & Norton, the heirs of James sued the heirs
of Norton and ended up taking everything they had. In the 1690's, Norton's
son, James with his siblings left Delaware but this is not the same person
hereafter referred to as James II.
James I sent his
oldest son, John on 23 APR 1682 on ship "AMITY" with Captain Thomas Holmes,
ahead to America and had him build their house on "Banks" Front Street,
Philadelphia. Captain Holmes was Penn's appointed Commissioner of Province &
Surveyor-General. John was his clerk and assistant.
!Purchased 5000 acres
from William Penn and several lots in the town of Philadelphia.
1677---Quaker Merchant
at Bush Lane, Scots Yard, London, England. After purchasing land in America
he sent servants ahead to build a temporary home. One year after
immigration---1684 he built the first brick house in Philadelphia on Dock
Creek.
1000 acres of 5000
were on the Nechaminy, Warrington Township, Bucks Co, Pennsylvania; 1000 or
more on the west side of Schuylkill at present side of Manayunk & his "town
lot" was on the Delaware Riverfront, near the mouth of Dock Creek. The lot
was 102 feet front on the river and extended back 396 feet. "Claypoole
House" No. 37 Walnut Street, Philadelphia.
Quakers---close to
Penn, 1st to witness his signature on Charter of Pennsylvania; treasurer of
the "Free Society of Traders"; Register General and a Member of Provincial
Council. Founder of settlement at Germantown; Judge of Provincial Court and
member of Governor's Council & Assembly.
James Claypoole's
historic accolades include the fact that his name is the first that appears
on the Pennsylvania Charter and that he reportedly was William Penn's best
friend.
David Chambers
Claypoole, James' great-grandson owned the first daily newspaper in
America...David Chambers Claypoole, who was the brother of James Jr., the
Armstrong County settler, printed the original copies of the Declaration of
Independence, the Constitution of the United States and George Washington's
Farewell Address, which was given to the printer personally by Washington.
Another distinguished
Claypoole of the past is James, grandson of the family founder, the earliest
native artist of Pennsylvania, whose specialty was portrait painting.
Not to be forgotten is
John Claypoole the third husband of Betsy Ross, of Flag making fame.

George
Washington's farewell address is one of the most important documents
in American history. Recommendations made in it by the first
president, particularly in the field of foreign affairs, have
exerted a strong and continuing influence on American statesmen and
politicians. The address, in which Washington informed the American
people that he would not seek a third term and offered advice on the
country's future policies, was published on September 19, 1796, in
David Claypoole's American Daily Advertiser.
David Chambers
Claypoole, James' great-grandson, owned the first daily newspaper in
America...David Chambers Claypoole, who was the brother of James
Jr., the Armstrong County settler, printed the original copies of
the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United
States and George Washington's Farewell Address, which was given to
the printer personally by Washington.

(JAMES8,

was born Abt. 1764 in Philadelphia, PA, and died 1817. He married ELIZABETH
(BETSY)
GRISCOM6
08 May 17836, daughter of SAMUEL
GRISCOM
and REBECCA.
She was born 01 Jan 17526, and died 30 Jan 18366.
Notes for ELIZABETH
(BETSY)
GRISCOM:
Betsy Ross is best
known as the legendary maker of the first American flag, but her story is an
inspirational one that goes well beyond her association with the flag. Betsy
Ross was a courageous and spirited woman whose life was filled with
hardships. She was shunned by her family and forbidden to worship as a
Quaker for marrying a man of a different faith. She was widowed three times,
and two of her seven daughters died as infants. Faced with these
adversities, Betsy managed to prevail as an industrious businesswoman,
running her own upholstery shop at a time when women were not given the same
opportunities as men.
On January 1, 1752,
Elizabeth Griscom, familiarly called Betsy, was the eighth of seventeen
children born into the Quaker family of Samuel and Rebecca Griscom. Samuel,
a successful carpenter, moved his large family from their farmhouse in New
Jersey to the growing city of Philadelphia when Betsy was three years old.
They eventually settled into a large home on 4th and Arch Streets.
Although Betsy is
often referred to as a seamstress, she was actually a trained upholsterer.
After completing her formal education at a school for Quaker children, Betsy
went on to apprentice to John Webster, a talented and popular Philadelphia
upholsterer. She spent several years under Webster, learning to make and
repair curtains, bedcovers, tablecloths, rugs, umbrellas and Venetian
blinds, as well as working on other projects that involved sewing.
While apprenticing to
Webster, Betsy met and fell in love with a fellow apprentice named John
Ross, the son of an Anglican clergyman. Being devout Quakers, Betsy’s family
did not approve of her relationship with John. Marrying outside of the faith
was an offense worthy of expulsion from the Quaker community. Nevertheless,
on November 4, 1773, Betsy and John fled across the Delaware River to Hugg’s
Tavern in Gloucester, New Jersey where they married without the blessing of
her family and fellow Quakers.
Betsy and John Ross
lived and ran their own upholstery business in a married for just over two
years when their marriage was tragically cut short by the war for
independence. John Ross, a member of the local militia, was guarding
munitions near the Delaware River when an explosion of gunpowder killed him,
leaving Betsy a childless widow at the age of 24. Betsy continued to run her
upholstery business, making extra income by mending uniforms and making
tents, blankets, musketballs, and cartridges for the Continental army.
On June 15, 1777,
Betsy married her second husband, Joseph Ashburn. Joseph was a mariner and
was often at sea, leaving Betsy, a new mother, alone in Philadelphia. The
sea was a dangerous place during the Revolution; in 1780 a British frigate
captured Joseph’s ship. The crew was charged with treason and taken to Old
Mill Prison in Plymouth, England. While Ashburn was imprisoned at Old Mill,
his and Betsy’s first daughter, Zilla, died at only nine months old and
their second daughter, Eliza was born. Joseph never learned of Zilla’s death
nor had the opportunity to see his new daughter, because he died of an
unknown illness before the British released the American prisoners in 1782.
Later in 1782, still
grieving from the death of her first child, Betsy was visited by an old
acquaintance named John Claypoole. He was a fellow prisoner and close friend
of Joseph Ashburn. John was there to bring Betsy the news of her second
husband’s death. Betsy learned that she was once again a widow at the age of
30.
John Claypoole and
Betsy rekindled their old friendship and married each other on May 8, 1783.
A year later, Betsy returned to her Quaker roots when she and her husband
joined the Society of Free Quakers—a sect, unlike the pacifist traditional
Quakers, that supported America’s fight for freedom from British rule.
Betsy was finally able
to enjoy a lengthy marriage to John Claypoole, but this thirty-four year
long relationship was not without its struggles. The couple had five more
daughters together, but only four of them lived to maturity. In 1793,
Betsy’s mother, father, and sister died within days of each other from the
yellow fever, leaving Betsy to raise her niece. In 1812, Betsy and John’s
young, widowed daughter Clarissa moved into their home with her five young
children and a sixth on the way. Once again, Betsy had a full house of
children to care for. But the children were not the only members of the
household who needed much of Betsy’s attention; for nearly twenty years,
John Claypoole was disabled as a result of his earlier war injuries. He died
from a lengthy illness in 1817.
Betsy continued her
upholstery and flag-making business with the help of her daughter Clarissa.
After over fifty years in her trade, she retired at the age of 76 and left
the city to live on her daughter Susanna’s farm in the remote suburb of
Abington. According to her descendents, although her vision was failing
rapidly, Betsy continued to take the long carriage ride to the Free Quaker
Meetinghouse in the city every week.
By 1833 Betsy was
completely blind. She spent the last three years of her life living with her
daughter Jane’s family on Cherry Street in Philadelphia. With family
present, Betsy died peacefully in her sleep on January 30, 1836. She was
eighty-four years old.
Betsy often amused her
children and grandchildren by recounting the story of how she made the first
Stars and Stripes. For nearly a century, the story of Betsy Ross and the
making of the first flag was known only by her family. It wasn’t until
William Canby’s speech to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1870
that the nation was first introduced to his remarkable grandmother and her
accomplishments.
According to Canby,
his grandmother told him about the day in 1776 when General George
Washington and two members of the Continental Congress walked through the
door of her upholstery shop. Well aware of the significance of their visit,
Betsy led her guests to the privacy of her parlor. Here, the men disclosed
the reason for their visit—they wanted Betsy to make a flag for the new
nation. Betsy explained that she had never made a flag before, but she would
be willing to try.
The men presented her
with a sketch of the proposed flag. She studied the drawing and noticed that
there were six-pointed stars in the design. Betsy suggested that the stars
should have five points, but the gentlemen protested, claiming that a great
many of these flags must be made very quickly and a five-pointed star would
be too difficult to make. With that, Betsy folded a piece of paper and with
just one snip of her scissors she revealed a perfect five-pointed star. The
men were impressed with her skill and agreed to change the design. One year
later, on June 14, 1777, Congress passed the Flag Resolution, making the
Stars and Stripes the official flag of the United States.
